Thomas Hjelm is Vice President of Business Development and Chief Digital Officer at New York Public Radio (NYPR). He is responsible for cultivating strategic business opportunities that support the organization’s growth across all media platforms and for guiding digital strategy, innovation and operations for its properties.
Since joining the organization in February 2011, Hjelm has overseen development of the company’s digital technology, product, user-experience and operations teams and set the vision for extending the reach of NYPR through new products and platforms. Among the milestones during his tenure are the relaunches of the websites for WQXR, The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, Radiolab and other franchises; the release of mobile apps for WNYC, WQXR and Radiolab; and the building of several new product and distribution partnerships. Hjelm is also an active voice across the public radio system, serving as an advisor to NPR Digital Services and other policy groups.
Before joining NYPR, Hjelm was Senior Director of Content Strategy and Business Operations for NBC Local Integrated Media. In this role, he oversaw operations, content and product strategy and partner management across a network of local news-and-lifestyle websites in 10 major U.S. markets. In 2008, he co-managed the reorganization of NBC Local’s digital operations and the relaunch of its online services.
Prior to this, Hjelm spent three years at AOL, where he was Director of Broadband Services for the AOL for Broadband premium service, Creative Director for major marketing campaigns in support of AOL.com and the AIM instant-messaging platform, and Strategic Consultant for AOL Television.
From 1995 to 2000, Hjelm was Writer, Producer and later Senior Director and Executive Producer of NBC.com. He led all creative developments and operations for an online network of original content produced in conjunction with such shows as Homicide: Life on the Street, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Saturday Night Live, The Pretender and Profiler.
Hjelm has also played key roles with two venture-backed digital-media startups: Flixer, a Hollywood-based digital film studio and marketing services company, where he was co-founder and Vice President of Product and Strategy; and LivePlanet, a company founded by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to engage young talent and produce cross-platform content, where he was Executive Producer. Prior to his career in digital media, Hjelm was a writer and editor in Los Angeles.
Hjelm received a B.A. in English from Swarthmore College and an M.F.A. in Film Production from the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television.
