Soprano Patricia Racette, discusses playing the role of Maddalena in "Andrea Chénier" at the Metropolitan Opera. The opera is about a real 19th-century French poet who was executed in the revolution. Maddalena, the female lead, is a wealthy, spoiled girl who is so changed by the revolution that in the end she volunteers to go to the guillotine with Andrea, the man she loves.

Soprano Patricia Racette never knew the old Metropolitan Opera House. But her performances at the new Met have firmly placed her amongst leading players on today’s opera stage.  She joins us today to talk about performing not one but three roles in The Met’s recent production of Puccini’s Il Trittico – as well as her upcoming role in its new production of Verdi's Il Trovatore.
