President Obama is touring San Juan, Puerto Rico, today as the first sitting president to make an official state visit to the island commonwealth in 50 years. He is making good on a promise he made while campaigning for the primaries in 2008. But he is also reaching out to constituents — while commonwealth Puerto Ricans can't vote in general elections, the growing population of Puerto Ricans living in Florida could be a deciding factor in swinging the sunshine state in 2012.

Today marks one year since the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The country suffered tremendously on January 12, 2010: 230,000 dead, thousands more injured, businesses and homes reduced to rubble. And yet the year only brought more difficulties, as cholera struck the countryside and accusations of fraud haunted a hotly-contested presidential election. Half of all American households sent donations to Haiti in the months following the earthquake. But as over 800,000 Haitians continue to live in temporary camps, the situation still seems dire. Where has all the aid gone? Who has it helped? What difference has it made?

Haiti's higher education system — already highly dysfunctional before the quake — is in shambles. The January 12 earthquake destroyed 90 percent of its school buildings and tore down nine of the state university's thirteen campuses. In a country that needs massive rebuilding and new leadership, who is taking care of educating its next generation of architects, politicians and doctors?
