Anna Badkhen

Journalist Anna Badkhen talks about her travels with the Fulani people of Mali and the challenges they face from modern farming to global warming to jihadist groups.

Anna Badkhen first traveled to Afghanistan in 2001, as a war correspondent and has returned many times since, drawn by the exquisite tradition of carpet weaving. In The World Is a Carpet: Four Seasons in an Afghan Village, Badkhen traced the creation of a new carpet as it is woven by the women and children of the remote village Oqa, then she follows the carpet out into the world beyond.

On today’s second Underreported, we find out about Baghdad’s Underground Railroad that helps women who have been victims of sexual assault. Anna Badkhen describes the network of safe houses in her article, "Baghdad Underground," which appears in the Summer issue of Ms. Magazine.
