Donnacha Dennehy's piano trio Bulb opened the Meet the Composer Launch Party and Concert on Tuesday, June 24. Pianist Vicky Chow, cellist Ashley Bathgate and violinist Todd Reynolds performed the overtone-directed piece before host Nadia Sirota spoke with Dennehy via Skype.

Composer Marcos Balter knew it was love at first sight when he heard flutist Claire Chase perform for the first time. After becoming friends, Balter wrote Pessoa for Chase, a piece for bass flute and electronics that opens a cavern of dark sound. Andrew Norman's Peculiar Strokes for string quartet, a series of miniatures with titles like "Up," "Down" and "Spread," contrast his somewhat-signature, grand tangles of sound for large ensembles. They exhibit the same focused energy, though—hear excerpts performed by the Attacca Quartet as well as Norman's explanation of their experimental inception.
