Composer Marcos Balter knew it was love at first sight when he heard flutist Claire Chase perform for the first time. After becoming friends, Balter wrote Pessoa for Chase, a piece for bass flute and electronics that opens a cavern of dark sound. Red Arc / Blue Veil by John Luther Adams, the subject of the first episode of Meet the Composer, is a piece that defies its small instrumentation. For piano, mallet percussion and processed sounds, the piece occupies space with gradually-evolving sonic sheets. Before listening to the piece, hear about Adams's move to New York after 40 years in Alaska in his on-stage interview with Nadia Sirota.

Andrew Norman's Peculiar Strokes for string quartet, a series of miniatures with titles like "Up," "Down" and "Spread," contrast his somewhat-signature, grand tangles of sound for large ensembles. They exhibit the same focused energy, though—hear excerpts performed by the Attacca Quartet as well as Norman's explanation of their experimental inception.
