I'm Jose Lopez and I'm 14 years old, attending Norman Thomas High School.
I live in Brooklyn, NY and work at Make The Road By Walking in a group called CALP (Community Action Learning Project). This is a group of youth that are trying to make our community a better place. (October 2000)
Interesting fact: I'm great and I've studied different forms of Martial Arts, such as Kick-boxing.
To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Radio Rookies, we're bringing you updates from Rookies whose stories aired years ago. Jesus Gonzalez and Jose Lopez were in one of the earliest Rookies workshops, in 2001. At the time, they were working as youth organizers at the community group Make the Road New York in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Almost a decade has passed and they're still there. But their group has grown to more than 70 young members.
Radio Rookie Graduate Jose Lopez received what he thought would be a tough assignment: interview life-long New Yorker Stephen Ucciardi, who still remembers when the Dodgers played in Brooklyn, and the Babe was unbeatable.
My story is about how there are not enough free things for kids in my neighborhood to do after school.
