Santorum Takes Kansas, Romney Wins Wyoming, Territories In GOP Caucuses

Saturday, March 10, 2012

Rick Santorum is the winner of the Kansas Republican caucus, according to The Associated Press, which says his victory is a "rout" over competitors Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul. The Topeka Capital-Journal caught up with the head of the Kansas Republican Oarty, who said "Santorum is cleaning up ... he has about three or four times more than anyone else."

Mitt Romney has won Wyoming's Republican caucuses, according to the AP. Romney won six delegates. Santorum gained three and Ron Paul one. Another remains uncommitted, and one more is still to be decided.

GOP voters in just six of Wyoming's 23 counties participated today; the rest voted earlier this week. Bob Beck of Wyoming Public Radio explained the state's unusual voting method for NPR:

"The Wyoming GOP traditionally spreads the dates out to allow ranchers to attend during the height of the calving season. And even then it's not over, because in mid-April another 14 at-large presidential delegates will be selected during the statewide Republican convention. So it isn't known until April 14 which presidential candidate Wyoming Republicans favor."

Romney won Wyoming's non-binding vote last month of Republican activists, notes the AP.

He also took two territories today, winning Guam's delegates and those in the Northern Mariana Islands, according to AP. The territories will pledge nine delegates each.

And GOP members are caucusing in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where vote results are expected later this evening.

Update 3/11/12 7:35 a.m.:

To follow up on the last territory to report in on Saturday, Mitt Romney has won the U.S. Virgin Islands' GOP caucus.

As the AP reports, seven of the territory's delegates are committed to Romney. Ron Paul also got one delegate, and one delegate is uncommitted.
