State Senate Greenlights Marine Transfer Station

by Jenna Flanagan

NEW YORK, NY May 21, 2008 —Mayor Michael Bloomberg thanked the State Senate for passing the Gansevoort bill that would allow the city to build a marine transfer station on the Manhattan peninsula so trash can be transported by barge instead of truck.

The facility is needed for the mayor's plan to reconfigure the city's garbage disposal system with waterfront stations so trash could be put on barges after it's picked up at the curb. Stations are planned for Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan's Upper East Side. The City Council is already on board.

Bloomberg says the plan will reduce traffic congestion and ease air pollution.

The bill is in committee in the state Assembly. Speaker Sheldon Silver blocked the legislation last fall because of objections from neighbors of the Gansevoort transfer station.

Trash and recyclables from the Bronx and Staten Island are already shipped by rail.
