Minor Eye Surgery for Paterson
by Karen DeWitt
NEW YORK, NY May 20, 2008 —Gov. David Paterson is set to undergo eye surgery this afternoon. He was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center early this morning after complaining of migraine like symptoms. Karen DeWitt reports from Albany.
Gov. David Paterson has been diagnosed with an acute form of glaucoma and will undergo laser surgery to relieve pressure on his eye. According to a statement from the governor's office, the operation is not expected to have any impact Paterson's long term health.
The governor will remain conscious during the procedure, but the senate majority leader, who is also acting lieutenant governor, has been notified.
Earlier in the day Senate leader Joe Bruno says he stands ready to help in the event of any emergency.
BRUNO: We are here to be supportive in any way that we can be to the governor.
REPORTER: Today is Paterson's 54th birthday, and he was supposed to have celebrated with a party in Manhattan.
In Albany, I'm Karen DeWitt.
