Quinn Sidesteps Questions on Mayoral Run
by Elaine Rivera
NEW YORK, NY May 20, 2008 —At a Midtown breakfast, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn was grilled about the discretionary fund scandal and whether it would hurt any future mayoral bid on her part.
Quinn sidestepped any questions whether she will seek to run for mayor saying she's focusing on being speaker and working on overhauling how council members distribute its discretionary funds.
QUINN: How people will judge me not about the next job I may or may not want but how I do this job, I don't believe will be defined by the problem we're in right now. It will be defined by whether we come up with a solution.
REPORTER: Quinn would not answer direct questions about whether she would support changes that would prevent council members from directing funds to agencies where relatives are employed.
Currently, the city charter permits council members to vote on appropriations for groups with which they may have a conflict - as long as they've publicly disclosed it.
