FDNY Has Fewer EMTs

NEW YORK, NY May 16, 2008 —The Fire Department is heading into summer with fewer Emergency Medical Technicians.
About 120 positions are unfilled, as EMT's and potential EMT's have taken jobs in other parts of the city workforce or in other cities altogether. Union Spokesman Robert Unger says the fire department will have to make EMT's work longer hours for overtime.
UNGER: The fire department's gonna spend a tremendous amount of money on overtime. They'd be better suited to put together a salary range that's competitive.
REPORTER: Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta says many EMTs like working overtime for the bigger paychecks. He says he supports higher salaries — but is facing budget cuts.
