NEW YORK, NY May 16, 2008 —Education advocates and elected officials rallied at City Hall today for more school money. They're angry that Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed budget doesn't include more for the city's students.

Randi Weingarten is the President of the United Federation of Teachers. She says Bloomberg has forgotten his pledge to strengthen schools by increasing funding:

WEINGARTEN: If you really want to make sure we have kids we've left behind, you also in tough times pony up and make sure you keep the promises.

REPORTER: The mayor's budget does anticipates a rise in education spending of about $240 million over last year but that mainly will cover fixed costs. Schools Chancellor Joel Klein has conceded the department will have to make strategic cuts though he has yet to offer specifics.
