MTA Picks Top Musicians

by Kathleen Horan

NEW YORK, NY May 16, 2008 —REPORTER: The results of a talent contest for musicians competing to serenade subway passengers are in.

Out of the 55 hopefuls who auditioned earlier this month, the MTA has approved 23 groups.

Among the winners are a vibraphonist, a punk cellist and a Chinese classical musician.

There's also a Latin fusion group known as Moviemento. Mireya Ramos started the 7 piece group a year ago. She says playing underground is sometimes a better gig than playing above.

RAMOS: You meet much more diverse people. And, in a nightclub, sometimes people are just there to drink and they might not even listen to your music. But in the subway, the people who are actually interested, they stop and listen.

REPORTER: The Music Under New York-approved musicians can busk in the 23-choicest spots in the subway system.

This, however, won't prevent the other non-approved hopefuls from singing in your ear during rush hours.
