Bloomberg Opens Bronx Power Plant

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY May 15, 2008 —With the flip of a switch, Mayor Michael Bloomberg today opened the city's first tri-generating power plant in the Bronx.

Unlike conventional power plants, tri-generating plants recapture the heat that's emitted in the process of burning gas or fuel oil.

The city spent $65 million for the renovation of an existing power plant in the Co-Op City neighborhood.

The renovated station is expected to emit about 40 percent less pollutants, and will create more electricity than Co-Op City needs. Enough, in fact, to sell the excess to local utilities.

The renovation is part of the Mayor's PlaNYC initiative to reduce greenhouse gases emitted in the city.
