Infections Down at City Hospitals

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY May 15, 2008 —The number of infections acquired at New York City's 11 public hospitals has dropped dramatically, according to the Health and Hospital Corporation.

Officials say central line bloodstream infections have dropped 55 percent since 2005, and there was a 78 percent reduction in the rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia among adult patients in intensive care units.

The HHC credits new practices, which include simple measures like ensuring proper hand hygiene.
