Prostitution "Booker" Pleads Guilty

by Arun Venugopal

NEW YORK, NY May 14, 2008 —One of four people charged with running the prostitution ring used by former governor Eliot Spitzer, has plead guilty in federal court.

WNYC's Arun Venugopal has more.

Thirty-two year old Temeka Lewis was responsible for booking clients for the Emperor's Club VIP. Today she stood in federal court, and plead guilty to promoting prostitution and money laundering.

However, Lewis' lawyer requested that the terms of her plea bargain be kept secret. That prompted a reporter covering the proceedings to stand up and protest that it was the public's right to know, given that Lewis's testimony may implicate Spitzer or the other three defendants.

The judge gave Lewis' attorney one hour to prepare his argument, and should have his decision on the matter today. Lewis faces up to 25 years in prison, but her lawyer said she'll more likely get about 16 months. The Judge Theodore Katz has agreed to make the plea agreement public.

For WNYC, I'm Arun Venugopal.
