Lawmakers React to Mayor's Own Council Fund

by Bob Hennelly

NEW YORK, NY May 14, 2008 —The Bloomberg Administration revealed it has turned millions over to dozens of non-profits on behalf of favored Council Members. The disclosure comes as the City Council faces a criminal probe into how it doles out money to non-profits.

Brooklyn Councilman Bill DeBlasio says he welcomes the transparency from the Mayor's side of City Hall.

DEBLASIO: When a group of elected officials request something of the Mayor that should be disclosed. When they request something of the Council Speaker that should be disclosed. When there is a fiscal sponsor or conduit that should be disclosed.

REPORTER: The mayoral grants were made at the request of eight council members and Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz.

The disclosure came in an internal memo from Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler.
