City Amends Juvenile Detention Procedures

by Arun Venugopal

NEW YORK, NY May 12, 2008 —Juveniles who get arrested on the weekend will no longer be at risk of remaining detained until Monday.

Starting next month the city is starting weekend processing for youth, which already takes place for adults. The city's criminal justice coordinator John Feinblatt said kids who commit low-level crimes shouldn't be lumped in with violent offenders.

FEINBLATT: We won't allow dangerous kids to remain on the streets. But we also don't want to separate low risk youth from their families and their schooling, a day more than we have to.

REPORTER: On average, eight juveniles enter detention on a weekend day.

Feinblatt said the city is also unveiling a new risk assessment model for judges - it puts emphasis on a juvenile's prior record and factors such as school attendance.

The model is meant to reduce the number of juveniles who are put in detention.
