Community Activists Speak Up on Downtown Rezoning

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY May 12, 2008 —Tonight, activists in Chinatown will protest a major rezoning plan they claim will drive up housing prices and drive out low-income tenants.

Lindsay Schubiner works with the Chinese Staff and Workers Association. She says the rezoning would preserve contextual zoning in much of the East Village, but not in Chinatown and the Lower East Side.

SCHUBINER: I think what's going to happen is more of what we've been seeing happening already. There are hotels going up. And luxury condos. When the plan protects the East Village even more of that development is going to be shifted to Chinatown and the Lower East Side.

REPORTER: Members of Community Board Three are behind the plan, but according to the Downtown Express, weren't able to get the city's backing for specific items, like inclusionary zoning for affordable housing.

Opponents of the rezoning plan will rally before tonight's 6:30 town hall meeting at PS 20.
