Campaign Promotes Baby Sleep Safety

by Laura Silver

NEW YORK, NY May 09, 2008 — Babies Sleep Safest Alone - that's the message of a new public education campaign.

The city's Administration for Childrens Services says 11 babies have died of suffocation this year. Commissioner John Mattingly says all of those deaths could have been prevented.

MATTINGLY: Sharing a bed with a baby unnecessarily endangers the lives of babies and young children.

REPORTER: Mattingly says the risk is increased when parents are drunk, high or if they're heavy sleepers.

A brochure about safe sleeping for babies is available - for more information, call 311.
