NEW YORK, NY May 08, 2008 —Police Detective James Zadroga, who died of lung disease after toiling at the World Trade Center's ruins, was one of 11 police officers added to the NYPD's wall of heroes.
Three of the police officers were killed in the line of duty last year, the other eight became the first NYPD members to be memorialized for dying of illnesses blamed on the dust they breathed at ground zero.
James Zadroga was 34 years old when he died in 2006 of lung disease.
All the officers names were enshrined yesterday in the lobby of police headquarters.
Those honored include Detective Russel Timoshenko, who was shot to death on July 14 during a traffic stop in Brooklyn. And two auxiliary police officers, Eugene Marshalik and Nicholas Pekearo, who were killed in March 2007 by a murder suspect in Greenwich Village.
