Reporter Sues NYPD for Racial Profiling

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY May 07, 2008 —An African-American New York Post reporter is suing the New York City Police Department, for its stop-and-frisk policies. The New York Civil Liberties Union is representing Leonardo Blair.

He tells WNYC's Brian Lehrer he was stopped in the Bronx. Blair says police asked him if he spoke English. And he responded, 'no hablo ingles.'

BLAIR: I was trying to draw attention to the fact that he was insulting me by asking me if I understood English when I clearly responded in English earlier.

REPORTER: Police spokesman Paul Browne says the two officers, one black and one Hispanic, acted appropriately, and only arrested Blair after he falsely claimed he didn't speak English and refused to identify himself. The charges were later dismissed.
