CUNY Staff: Budget Cuts Don't Make Sense

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY May 07, 2008 —Faculty members, students and union representatives from City University of New York rallied in front of City Hall today to protest the mayor's proposed $46 million budget cut to the college system.

Barbara Bowen, president of the CUNY faculty and staff union, says the cuts don't make sense.

BOWEN: It is outrageous to propose a cut to CUNY at the moment when CUNY's enrollment is the highest it's been in 35 years...also the city has the highest budget surplus it has ever had....

REPORTER: The group showed up with 20,000 postcards signed by students which they planned to deliver to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. The budget calls for a $28 million cut in operating costs and an additional $15 million in student support costs.
