City Pushes for Cameras in Bus Lanes
by Kathleen Horan
NEW YORK, NY May 07, 2008 —If the city gets its way, there'll soon be an extra set of eyes in bus-only lanes.
The Bloomberg administration wants state lawmakers to approve a proposal to install cameras the lanes to discourage drivers from illegally double-parking.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city can't afford to have an officer in every bus, so this is the next best thing.
BLOOMBERG: Cameras are a ways to use technology at a relatively negligible cost to make sure that people obey the law. People obey the law and that will reduce congestion and bus lanes will work.
REPORTER: The cameras would be similar to those on traffic lights that photograph motorists going through red lights.
