School Groups Call for Targeted Funding
by Elaine Rivera
NEW YORK, NY May 06, 2008 —Educational activists are calling on Schools Chancellor Joel Klein to target $360 million in state funding for specific programs.
Representatives for six educational groups contend that money was won in the Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit last year. It dictates that the money should go for priorities like middle school reform, class size reduction and programs for English language learners.
Mike Mulgrew, of the United Federation of Teachers, says city schools can't be short changed any longer.
MULGREW: This money was specifically designed to equal the playing field for New York City who for years was not being treated fairly by the state department...
REPORTER: Currently, the Department of Education wants to turn the money over to principals to spend at their own discretion at their schools.
