St. Vincent's Redevelopment Plan Rejected

by Matthew Schuerman

NEW YORK, NY May 06, 2008 —St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Centers will have to revamp its plan to tear down nine buildings in the heart of Greenwich Village; replace them with housing and use the proceeds to modernize its facilities.

A majority of the Landmarks Preservation Commission say they can't support the plan because it doesn't preserve historic structures and is out of character with the neighborhood.

Delia Guazzo, a Village resident, opposes the plan.

GUAZZO: I'm thrilled, I'm really thrilled. It appeared to me from listening to the commission that they really got it.

REPORTER: A spokesman for St Vincent's says the hospital would reapply to the commission under a hardship provision.

Even in cases where the commission does not think a change is appropriate, it sometimes grants exceptions to nonprofits that can prove they have no other option but to demolish a structure.
