State Senate Proposes to Suspend Gas Tax

NEW YORK, NY April 30, 2008 —In Albany, the State Senate will introduce a bill today to suspend the state gas tax, which is about 32 cents per gallon. But the plan faces several hurdles.
If the tax is suspended, it could create a $500 million gap in state finances.
The Democrat-led Assembly is expected to vote against it, but Joe Bruno the Republican Leader of the Senate said it was necessary to provide relief for New Yorkers hurting from higher prices at the pump as well as for staples like milk, bread, and eggs.
