Building Commissioner Resigns

NEW YORK, NY April 22, 2008 —The city's buildings commissioner has resigned a day after Mayor Bloomberg criticized her agency's performance. WNYC's Matthew Schuerman reports.
Patricia Lancaster served Mayor Bloomberg loyally for six years during an unprecedented building boom. She reformed a department that had been significantly scaled back during the Giuliani administration, filling 250 vacant positions, rewriting the building code, and putting public records online.
But she was plagued by a rash of construction fatalities. Yesterday, the mayor noted that the 13 construction deaths so far this year outnumbered the 12 from 2007.
This morning, she met with Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion and offered her resignation. The mayor took it.
