Critics Slam Port Authority Over WTC Blueprints

by Bob Hennelly

NEW YORK, NY April 22, 2008 —Critics of the Port Authority say they believe the agency can not develop the World Trade Center site without tighter regulation by the City and the NYPD. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more.

REPORTER: The recent discovery of confidential blueprints in the trash prompted longtime critics of the Port Authority to cry foul. The bi-state agency says the recent incidents are under investigation, and that security at the massive construction site is tight.

But members of the Skyscraper Safety Campaign want the City of New York and the NYPD to have greater role at the site. They are concerned that lax security makes the site more vulnerable to another terrorist attack.

As for building safety, the Port Authority is technically immune from City codes and ordinances. The city says it has received assurances from the Port Authority that they will meet or exceed all of the city's building and fire safety codes. For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly.
