Con Ed Probes Manhole Blast

by Amy Eddings

NEW YORK, NY April 17, 2008 —Con Edison is investigating what prompted low-voltage cables beneath a Midtown manhole to smolder, prompting a fire, and an explosion of the manhole cover.

No one was hurt in the early morning incident, but 33 residents at five small apartment buildings were forced out of their homes for about five hours, after fire officials noticed high carbon monoxide levels and a gas leak that Con Ed says could have been caused by the fire.

The manhole explosion occurred just two blocks from the site of last July's deadly steam pipe explosion.
