Picket Lines Force Closure of three Catholic Schools

by Amy Eddings

NEW YORK, NY April 15, 2008 —Picket lines formed again outside ten Roman Catholic high schools in the city and its suburbs, just days before Pope Benedict is to arrive for a three day visit.

The strike, by the Lay Faculty Association, forced three high schools in Manhattan -- Maria Regina, Cardinal Spellman and Cardinal Hayes -- to close early. The union called the strike after the New York Archdiocese rejected its proposal to reduce the term of the contract to three years instead of four.

A second lay teachers' union, the Federation of Catholic Teachers, accepted a four year contract last week.
