Critics Question Quinn's Budget Reform Proposals

by Bob Hennelly

NEW YORK, NY April 12, 2008 —In the aftermath of last week's disclosure about several years of deceptive budgeting at the city council, Speaker Christine Quinn has rolled out several proposed reforms including the creation of an independent compliance officer.

REPORTER: Councilman John Liu says Quinn is motivated by ambition for higher office that's not in the best interest of the Council.

LIU: We are clearly seeing the conflict of interest that is rearing its ugly head in a person who would like to be mayor and at the same time is supposed to be the steward of the legislative body.

REPORTER: In announcing her proposals Friday, Quinn was joined by several Council members and representatives of non-partisan good government groups who said the moves would improve council transparency. There is an currently ongoing Federal criminal probe of the Council's bookkeeping. Speaker Quinn has said she is not a target of that investigation.
