NEW YORK, NY April 10, 2008 —City Comptroller Bill Thompson is calling for immediate action to clean up a city-owned athletic center in Brooklyn that houses day care and pre-kindergarten programs.
He says his auditors found decrepit and dangerous conditions during a routine financial audit of the Paerdegat Athletic Club in Canarsie — including missing fire extinguishers, exposed insulation and uncovered outlets. Thompson says conditions were so disgusting; his auditors did not want to return.
THOMPSON: "Fungus, mold and actual mushrooms growing on a floorboard under a track. Let me make it clear: that's an indoor track."
REPORTER: A spokesman for the Parks Department says it is reviewing the materials submitted by Thompson and it has sent inspectors to the club.
