Call for Probe Into Council Finances
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY April 09, 2008 —Council Speaker Christine Quinn met with over 300 seniors yesterday to discuss creating a more senior friendly city.
Quinn, however, continued to be pressed by reporters about the recent revelation that for years, council leadership budgeted millions of dollars to non-existent nonprofit groups and then awarded the money to existing organizations of their choice.
QUINN: All I can do is what I believe I did, which is turn information over to the authorities, state the facts of the matter, repeat the facts of the matter and then recognize I am Speaker of the City Council and the buck stops with me.
REPORTER: Last week, Councilman Tony Avella wrote and requested that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo investigate the controversy.
A spokesman for Cuomo's office says any state review would have to wait until the resolution of an existing federal probe into the Council's finances.
The city's Department of Investigation is also investigating the Council's records.
