Jury Deliberations Begin in James' Trial

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY April 09, 2008 —Defense lawyers for former Newark Mayor Sharpe James urged jurors to acquit him on charges of fraud and conspiracy because federal prosecutors failed to present any evidence that James participated in sweetheart land sales to a former mistress.

The defense said none of the prosecution's witnesses testified that the ex-mayor was involved in any wrongdoing whatsoever. They argue that the Newark City Council, not James, set prices and had final approval over the sales of city land.

James is accused of arranging for Tamika Riley to pay a discounted $46,000 for land that she quickly sold for more than $600,000 between 2001 and 2005.

Jurors will begin deliberations today.
