Schumer Helps Family of Slain Student

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY April 07, 2008 —Sen. Charles Schumer is appealing directly to the State Department to cut the red tape and immediately grant the documents needed for the grieving parents of Ming-hui Yu, the slain Columbia PhD student, to come to New York City to claim their son's body.

24-year-old Ming-hui Yu was killed Friday night after being struck by a car at Broadway and 122nd Street as he tried to flee two attackers. A 13-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree manslaughter. A second teen is being sought.

Yu's parents live in China's Shandong province. Ming-hui was their only child.
