Catholic Teachers Strike Today
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY April 04, 2008 —Teachers at 10 Catholic schools around the city plan to call in sick today. They say the Archdiocese of New York isn't playing fair in contract negotiations.
Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling says officials will see this morning whether enough teachers are working to keep the schools open. The schools are in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and Westchester County.
The Federation of Catholic Teachers says the archdiocese hasn't provided negotiators with needed information about health insurance. Zwilling says the archdiocese has given the union all the data it requested.
Another teachers union, the Lay Faculty Association, recently authorized a strike at 10 other local Catholic schools during the pope's New York visit later this month.
