Second Day of Defense in Former Newark Mayor Corruption Trial

by Amy Eddings

NEW YORK, NY April 02, 2008 —The defense attorneys for former Newark Mayor Sharpe James rested, after their client refused to take the stand in his federal corruption case.

The 72-year-old former mayor is accused of improperly using his position to steer city owned properties to a former girlfriend at deep discounts and allowing her to then flip them for a large profit. Both James and Tamika Riley are charged with fraud and conspiracy.

His supporters have packed the courtroom, and their behavior prompted a rebuke by the judge yesterday. So, what happened today? Star Ledger columnist Bob Braun joins WNYC’s Amy Eddings.
