Quinn Searching for Budget Alternatives
Council Speaker Christine Quinn says she's committed to finding alternative ways to cut the city budget.
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY April 02, 2008 —REPORTER: Quinn presented her response to Mayor Bloomberg's preliminary budget yesterday. She says she hopes cutting other city agencies will help restore cuts to education.
QUINN: So, we want to avoid principals having to say, "I don't have the money to have that after school program. I don't have the money to have the money to have tutoring. I don't have the money to do this program."
REPORTER: Quinn singled out the city's Human Resources Administration as one place for additional cuts. The $8 billion agency has over 14,000 employees who handle a wide array of social service needs.
Quinn says the HRA had seen a steady decline in case loads that justified a closer look.
The City Council and the mayor have to agree on a budget by the end of June.
