Bruno Reacts to DA's Report on Travel Document Scandal
WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY March 29, 2008 —State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno says the Albany District Attorney's report on the release of his travel records is proof that Gov. Eliot Spitzer lied to the public and was obsessed with doing a "political hit job" on the Republican leader.
DA David Soares has decided not to indict the former governor. But his report finds that Spitzer ordered an aide to release the documents. Soares, a Democrat, issued a report in September saying nobody in Spitzer's administration acted improperly. He says he recently returned to the case after a statement provided to him from a former Spitzer aide seemed to conflict with previous testimony.
Republican George Winner, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Investigations, says Soares didn't pursue a thorough investigation because he was trying to protect Spitzer. For his part, Joe Bruno is calling on Gov. David Paterson to take "appropriate action" against those involved. Paterson says he's reviewing the report.
