Prosecutor Says Spitzer Ordered Aide to Release Records

by Amy Eddings

NEW YORK, NY March 28, 2008 —A criminal prosecutor says former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer ordered the dirty tricks scandal to discredit Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno, but Albany DA David Soares is not calling for any indictment of Spitzer.

Soares says his second investigation of Troopergate finds former Spitzer aide Darren Dopp was directly ordered by Spitzer in a profanity-laced exchange to release records that could embarrass Bruno, and perhaps lead the Senate leader deeper into a federal investigation.

This report reverses the findings of one in September, in which Soares determined there was no evidence of a plot. He also said no one in Spitzer's Administration acted improperly.
