NEW YORK, NY March 27, 2008 —If the Armory Show’s high art prices aren’t quite your thing, there’s another, more humble art affair taking place this weekend – the Slideluck Potshow.
Slideshow: Slideluck PotshowIt’s an old-fashioned potluck, where participants bring a dish to share, something to drink and – slides of their photographs. Casey Kelbaugh founded the event eight years ago in his backyard in Seattle. He was looking for a way to bring artists together.
KELBAUGH: Everyone tends to be working in their own darkroom or studio and my intention was to create a sort of communal viewing experience.
REPORTER: Since then the event has traveled to 30 cities around the world, and includes amateur and professional photojournalists, art and fashion photographers, designers and sculptors. Last time it was held in New York, it drew more than 1,200 participants. Event director Alys Kenny says the evening provides an important networking opportunity. But she says it’s also a counterpoint to the commercial pressure of the Armory Show.
KENNY: People have been at the Armory Show all day shopping for art, and I think they’re looking for something at the end of the day to go and relax and have a good time, and have a glass of wine and watch an amazing art show in a community, non-competitive environment. :15
REPORTER: In addition to curating slides from 40 different artists, event founder Kelbaugh will also be bringing roasted pork tenderloin in rosemary and garlic sauce.
