NEW YORK, NY March 26, 2008 —A new chapter has opened in the fate of the Hudson rail yards on the Far West Side, considered the last remaining substantial piece of undeveloped property in Manhattan. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which owns the Hudson Yards, has awarded development rights to Tishman Speyer, the owner of Rockefeller Center.
The Hudson Yards were the site of a failed bid by Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a stadium to serve as the host of Olympic Opening Ceremonies. WNYC's Matthew Schuerman has been following the change plans for the Hudson Yards and tells Amy Eddings what the deal means for a cash-strapped MTA.
