NEW YORK, NY March 26, 2008 —The city comptroller says a Brooklyn non-profit that helps struggling families keep their kids out of foster care has been poorly managed. According to Comptroller Bill Thompson's audit, the Child Development Support Corporation failed to do criminal background checks on 95 percent of its employees.

Thompson says the organization also failed to fully document cases making it difficult to tell whether families were getting helped or not.

THOMPSON: The question is we have with this agency probably close to 4.5 almost $5 million worth of contracts. Are they doing the job that's necessary are they providing the services to an incredibly vulnerable population.

REPORTER: The contracts are with the Administration for Children's Services which is supposed to oversee the program. ACS says Thompson's audit relied on old data and problems have been corrected. The agency could not say yet whether any employees had criminal histories or not.
