Buildings Inspector Arrested for Falsifying Records
by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY March 20, 2008 —An investigation into last weekend’s crane collapse has let to the arrest of an inspector with the Buildings Department. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez has more from Midtown.
Edward Marquette has been charged with falsifying records according to the Department of Investigations. He lied about inspecting the crane on March 4 after a complaint was called in by residents that were concerned it was unsafe.
Now the Department of Buildings says it's highly unlikely a March 4 inspection would have prevented the tragedy that happened on Saturday when seven people were killed.
However the department has ordered an immediate re-inspection of 100 percent of the cranes inspected by Marquette over the last six months.
Reporting from Midtown, for WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez.
