NEW YORK, NY March 18, 2008 —In his swearing-in speech, Gov. David Paterson stressed continuity and reconciliation. The governor also made it clear that both Republicans and Democrats would have to consider the new economic reality in negotiating the budget.
PATERSON: We are looking at an economy that is reeling. And I must say to all of you in government and all of you in business that you must meet with me in the next couple of weeks and adjust our budget accordingly.
REPORTER: Responding to loud applause after a call for bi-partisanship, Paterson said healthcare, education and the problems facing quote "the single mother with two jobs" need immediate attention.
The state Legislature faces an April 1 deadline to pass an estimated $124 billion budget.
Meanwhile, Paterson tells the Daily News that both he and his wife had affairs during a rough patch in their marriage several years ago.
Paterson says he maintained a relationship with another woman from 1999 until 2001. He and his wife eventually sought counseling and repaired their relationship.
