Tibetan Protesters Hold "Die In" at UN
by Marc Garber
NEW YORK, NY March 17, 2008 —As protesters in Tibet face a deadline at this hour to surrender to Chinese military police, demonstrators are rallying here. Tibetan groups are holding a "die in" outside the United Nations.
The unrest in Tibet began March 10 - the anniversary of a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese rule in the region that sent the Dalai Lama into exile.
The death toll from the demonstrations in Tibet is in dispute. The Tibetan governor says 16 people were killed, but the Dalai Lama's exiled government says 80 people were killed.
