Protestors, Police Clash at Chinese Consulate
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY March 17, 2008 —Police and protesters say they suffered injuries after a rally outside the Chinese Consulate in Manhattan turned violent this weekend.
Protests are taking place all over the world - from Washington to Brussels - over a crackdown by Chinese troops on rioting Buddhist monks in Tibet.
After some of the picketers started throwing rocks, the NYPD tried to contain the crowd which led to several hundred protesters clashing with police.
The demonstrators want a boycott of the Summer Olympics in Beijing. They say the Chinese government is violating human rights in Tibet and killing protesters there.
In China, demonstrations against Chinese rule of Tibet are the largest and most violent in the region in nearly two decades, spreading to neighboring Nepal and India.
