Coney Island Opens for 2008
by Kathleen Horan
NEW YORK, NY March 17, 2008 —One sign that spring is on its way is yesterday's opening of Astroland on Coney Island.
Lovers of the old-school amusement park worried that the 2007 season would be its last, with plans to redevelop the beach front property looming.
Though Astroland's fate is still up in the air, it's back for at least one more season. Owner Carol Albert says yesterday's opening followed the traditional celebration.
ALBERT: We always invite the first 100 people on opening day to ride the Cyclone for free and we have what we call madcap festivities and then the crowning moment is when a bottle of egg cream is broken on the front of the Cyclone.
REPORTER: Through June 8, Astroland is only open on the weekend. It opens daily beginning on June 13.
